Despite dragging the chain for nearly 20 odd years, it was announced that Brisbane city council have maybe approved a Development Proposal for Red Hill Skate Rink in the inner city suburb best known for housing Wayne’s Broncos.
The DA was put in by a cinema group who wanted to redevelop the site in a $10 million proposal, but the city still isn’t sure if it’s worth doing anything with the sight.
The Red Hill Skate Rink burnt out in 2002, and has since become a place for local teenagers to drink goon and do nangs, while members of the older generations constantly refer to it as an ‘eyesore.’
However, the hope that a burnt out old skate rink might actually be put to some use looks in jeopardy now, after the DA is being challenged in the Planning and Environment Court.
The case in the P&E Court is being lead by some jealous rival company called Reading Group who are commercially opposed to having another cinema within driving distance of one of their own.
The case is set to be heard in court again next month, with a decent chance that Brisbane will show the rest of the state how useless they can be.
Our reporters asked a couple of locals in the leafy suburban enclave about the rink.
Andrew, 58, told us that; “The place is a friggin blight on Red Hill. They should do something about it. But at the same time I’m worried that if they develop it, it could affect local traffic in the area.”
Eileen, 84, just told us that it was a real shame that they weren’t using that lovely old rink for something.
“To be honest, I kind of enjoyed nothing being there?” she said.
