Despite making a combined salary that was double what their parents earned before them, the Stewarts find themselves struggling to live out the so-called Australian dream.
This has included unwisely applying for a $500k mortgage for a boomer home special (buying a house with more bedrooms than needed as it’s all about taking up as much space as possible) and opting for a second child (in this economy?).
With the rising costs of living, increased mortgage rates and childcare fees burning a never-ending hole in their pocket, the Stewarts have found themselves struggling to stay afloat or even live a good quality of life. But luckily, they may have just found themselves a solution that doesn’t involve living in a tent or piling into a family member’s spare room – squatting in an Ikea!
It’s alleged this idea came to the couple after they spent an afternoon at the Betoota Ponds Ikea, which they reasoned was far too spacious and liveable not to have occupants.
Chatting to our reporter, the Stewarts say they’re not explicitly advising other families to do the same, but they’d be more than open to some neighbours.
“It seemed like a no brainer”, says Carol, “I mean it has almost everything you need.”
“The Tv doesn’t fucking work but that’s manageable.”
“The kids have bunk beds, I’ve got the nice coastal decor I’ve always wanted.”
“As long as we remember to sneak into the toilets come opening time, we’re all gravy.”
“And, a full eggs brekkie is only $5 each”
“They’re practically begging families to move in.”
