A local woman has learnt the hard way that there’s really not a lot of research when it comes to gynaecological care, after forking out a few hundred to see a gynaecologist about her PCOS symptoms.
Having already heard horror stories about women trying to receive care for their endometriosis, Zooey Devens [26] really didn’t have high expectations for her follow up appointment with Dr. Reece Manning, but she was still, nonetheless, quite disappointed.
“Hmm okay”, says Dr Manning, furrowing his brow as he scanned her ultrasound report, “so you’ve got some cysts in your ovaries, that’s likely what is causing the irregular periods.”
“What’s causing that?”, she queried.
“Yeah dunno.”
“Can I do something to get them to go away?”
“Hmmmm not really.”
“Oh…can I remove them?”
Dr Manning shakes his head.
“We don’t recommend that as it can damage the ovaries. Unless of course the cyst gets really big.”
“Then it can burst and that really hurts haha.”
“Anyway, I recommend going on the pill. It suppresses ovulation so that should stop them getting bigger.”
Letting out a sigh, Zooey asks if there’s anything else she can do, seeing as that seems more like a band aid effect and not a long term solution to her problem.
“Oh yes of course!”, he exclaims, reaching into one of his desk drawers and rifling around, “you can get the IUD.”
“It only takes a couple of minutes, completely PAINLESS.”
“Just a little pinch.”
“Of course, let me know when you want to start having babies.’
“Then we can look at some other solutions.”
More to come.
