A Betoota Heights man has made it clear this afternoon that he will not be watching the Matildas take on France, he will be watching a documentary about the last twenty-fours hours that Nazi warship Bismarck spent floating before it was sunk during an Allied raid in 1941.
In recent weeks, the attention that the Matildas have garnered from the wider Australian public has only angered Bruce Turner, who is of the belief that women’s’ sport is inferior in every way possible.
The Advocate spoke to Bruce moments ago as he stood on the back step of his home on Greenbrayer Street, one that shares of common fence line with our reporter.
Bruce’s wife has recently told him he’s no longer permitted to smoke in the living room as it upsets the dog. It’s an added source of frustration and anger for Bruce.
“I’m not watching that,” he said.
“I’ve got some show about the Bismarck up on the SBS. Did you know it was cutting edge when it was made but ultimately got unstuck by a little biplane and a torpedo. Hard to fathom, isn’t it?”
Without prompting him to do so, Bruce doubled back to share his thoughts on the Matildas.
“I just don’t get the appeal,” he said.
“It’s like watching the Toyota Cup when you could be watching Origin, you know? Like having a tofu salad instead of a steak.”
When our reporter explained that this Women’s FIFA World Cup has been the biggest sporting event in Australian history by attendance, Bruce’s eyebrows slow lifted and he pursed his lips.
“Shit, aye? Well. What a world we live in.”
More to come.
