A local woman has once again found herself struggling to get through the first chapter of a fantasy smut book, after learning the female protagonist is nineteen years old.
Hannah Melvin, 32, a longtime fan of supernatural romance, says she doesn’t understand why almost every single popular fantasy series insists on having a lead female who’s not even old enough to drive a V8 – which is made even more the worse, when her love interest is always over hundred years old.
“I don’t understand, these books are chock full of smut, so they’re obviously not meant to be read by underage women”, laments Hannah, “why can’t they make the women over the age of 25?”
“I just can’t relate to a teenage girl. Especially one who’s so fucking BRATTY. It just gives me the ick.”
Hannah says it would make more sense for the female character to be a bit older, so it can be enjoyed by both teenage girls and women with a developed prefrontal cortex.
“I find it a bit insidious to be honest. Why are these female authors normalising relationships between old men and girls barely out of high school?”
“Just because he’s 500 years old and insanely hot, doesn’t mean it’s okay.”
Hannah adds that it’s especially icky as she knows what it’s like to be a young girl, so it’s very difficult for her to get absorbed into the story.
“Every time I start getting into it, I just remember I’m reading about a teenager. Just…eugh!”
More to come.
