Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced plans to recommission the Nauru Detention Centre, but this time, things will be different.
The government will make it safe for the centre’s LGBTQI workers, carbon neutral, and powered entirely by renewables.
According to Albanese, the Nauru Detention Centre will be a model of inclusivity and sustainability for the world to follow. The facility will feature cutting-edge technology and will be staffed by highly trained professionals who will provide a safe and inclusive work environment for all.
Albanese has also made a commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of the Nauru Detention Centre by powering it entirely by renewable energy sources. The facility will be fitted with solar panels and wind turbines, ensuring that it runs on clean and sustainable energy.
“We cannot ignore the plight of those who work in the detention centre,” Albanese said.
“As, uh, we also cannot ignore the plight of the queue-jumpers detained there. Nevertheless, we must provide a safe and secure work environment for all, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”
The announcement has been met with mixed reactions, with some hailing it as a step in the right direction for LGBTQI workers, while others have criticised the Prime Minister for recommissioning a facility that has been plagued by controversy in the past.
Critics have also raised concerns about the feasibility of the project, questioning how the government will finance the cost of converting the detention centre into a fully renewable facility.
Despite the criticism, Albanese remains confident in his commitment to the recommissioning of the Nauru Detention Centre.
“This is about providing a safe and secure work environment for all those who work in the center,” he said.
“We will not be deterred by those who are critical of our efforts to make a positive difference in the lives of those who work in the detention centre.”
