The nation’s Greenies have this week taken inspiration from some of the climate protests that have been dominating the news lately, by targeting one of Australia’s most prolific artworks.
As groups such as ‘Just Stop Oil ‘target famous artwork with food, such as Van Gogh’s sunflowers and, ah, a wax figure of King Charles, plenty of copy cat protesters have started popping up around the world to launch a string of similar attacks.
Which despite being dumb, do seem to be getting the causes plenty of PR without causing actual damage to the artwork.
However, instead of resulting in numerous angry thought pieces in every major newspaper, the attack on MONA’s ‘Great Wall of Vagina’ has garnered much praise, with onlookers mistaking it as a live art experiment.
It’s alleged a couple of young adults were seen throwing canned tomato soup at the artwork, which much to their dismay, resulted in a chorus of impressed murmuring by bystanders.
“OOOH I LOVE IT, how progressive,” said one elderly woman, nodding her head in admiration, “it’s so realistic, the absence of control against mother nature.”
“Hmm yes, yes”, agrees another reveller, “the vandalism of the uterus.”
“I can really feel the pain that went into this.”
When asked what they planned on doing with the ‘destroyed’ artwork, MONA’s art director, Leisl Thomas, says she has no plans on having it professionally cleaned.
“It really works actually”, explains Leisl, “passion, anger, the frustration of youth.”
“Violence, mess, chaos, disruption.”
“A breathtaking appropriation of an already stellar artwork.”
