Just days until NSW begins to open back up, the youth of Sydney have finally mastered ‘the picnic’.
Since September 18, the only form of socialising that has been allowed in the Harbour City has been for outdoor groups of 5 in public places.
While the NSW police have definitely turned a blind eye to public drinking over the last month, what happens after these picnics would make their skin crawl – if they knew.
The delusional state government has spent the last 15 weeks thinking that the young people of Sydney, a city that has already starved them of nightclubs for the best part of a decade, honestly go home to bed after sunset.
This is far from the reality, according to one Sydneysider.
Double Bay local, Maeve Kennedy (Capricorn) says throughout her entire young adulthood, a social life has been something that she’s had to fight for, even before the pandemic.
“Before the lockdowns we had lock-out laws” says the 20-year-old registered nurse.
“Me and my girlfriends used to have to fly to Brisbane or Melbourne to even visit a bar that was open after 10pm”
“Now they honestly expect we won’t bend the rules on these picnics? It’s so cute”
As Maeve points out, for a young person that has spent the best part of 18 months in and out of lockdown, it is very easy for a picnic of five to turn into a house party of ten.
“It starts of with cheeseboards and seltzers in the park. Then all of a sudden it’s getting dark and you’ve merged with another picnic”
“By this stage everyone is far too pissed to remember the rules….”
“Next thing you know, all ten of you are back in some blokes sharehouse well outside of your five k radius, partying with his five other house mates”
This phenomena is known as Pick-Ons, according to the kids.
“It’s pretty naughty I know” she says.
“But what can you do?”
“Even before this pandemic we felt like we were breaking the law for having a house party”
“In 2019 we’d still get a visit from the cops for keeping our boomer neighbours awake after 8pm… Now we are getting visits from the cops for having more than 3 people in a residence”
“When you live in a city where cops are more interested appeasing inner-city property investors than stopping drive-by shootings..”
“You get used to being told you are doing the wrong thing”
