A Namoi River Murray Cod has revealed today that she’s pretty fucking over this climate.
Speaking exclusively to The Advocate, the 22-year-old Cod named Mary said she’s not having much fun with all the ash in the water system at the moment.
After a tough few years battling reduced flows and algal blooms, the mother of 10 or so 1000 explained that she’s beginning to think every day may not be a blessing.
“Honestly, will it ever end?” asked the fish poking her head out of the water to get some oxygen just outside of Manilla.
“I’m stoked for the Koalas and all the other native fauna that all this rain has put out the fires and they can try rebuild their lives, but this ash washing into the waterways is fucking kill us,” she said.
This comes after huge downpours across NSW and Queensland have washed large amounts of ash into river systems causing the water to lose oxygen and suffocate the fish.
Hundreds of thousands of fish are already reportedly dead and ecologists are warning the disaster could have effects on the ecosystem for decades to come.
“What’s a fish to do. All I want to do is meander around all day pick off a few little perch and carp here and there and live a fish’s life,” Mary continued.
“Please don’t get me started on the Nationals and their systematic and long term mismanagement of the environment out here to benefit a select few.”
“I’m not in the mood for it today.”
