The race that stops the nation got its name for a reason; every Tom, Dick, Arthur and Martha are tuned in to watch it.

However, as one problem gambler revealed to The Advocate, real punters don’t get that gee’d up for The Melbourne Cup.

“Real punters don’t care about Cup Day as much as everyone else,” says Jim Simpson, one of Betoota’s biggest punters. 

“It’s a chump’s race”

“It’s a shit of a race to punt on”

“Every other race on the day is actually shit house”

“You want real punting? Have a go at Derby Day” 

“There are 4 group races in one day there”

When asked whether he would abstain from betting in the race, Jim looked at our reporter like she had two heads.

“Of course, I’ll still have a bet”

“All I’m saying is it’s a race day for fair-weather racing fans.” 

The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most famous annual thoroughbred race worth almost $8 million in total, not to mention the amount of money generated by through punting.

This year’s 24 strong field looks like it’ll be one of the toughest races to back a winner, nevertheless, Jim has tipped us Anthony Van Dyk – the favourite.

“He’s a certainty” he says.

“Will be too good for em I reckon.”
