The kingfish are biting in Lake Betoota at the moment and one local fisherman doesn’t want to be caught unprepared.
While Marcus Fresno says he’d be a fool not to head out to the drop-off without a live tank teeming with baitfish, he told our reporter this afternoon that there’s still a few soft and hard plastic lures he wants to experiment with.
But that was only after he explained to The Advocate that he was just slipping down to Colin’s TackleWorld in Betoota Grove during his lunch break to buy some heavier leader because last weekend, he had a few fish bite clean through it.
“Fishing is about learning,” he said.
“Some say you never stop! [laughs] I thought I’d be right on my light leader and heavy braid last week going after bottlenose dolphin last weekend but the bastards kept ripping it off. So this week, I’m getting some much heavier leader, real heavier braid and I’m also bringing my lever-action .30-30 so we don’t have to gaff it,”

When asked if he knew that shooting bottlenose dolphins wasn’t just heavily frowned upon in the community but also illegal, Fresno said he didn’t.
However, he was quick to change the subject, AirDropping our reporter a number of Navionics marks where he catches bulk fish in return for The Advocate’s silence on the dolphin shooting.
