The supporters of The Mount Wellington cable car proposal say they are vowing to push on, after the Hobart City Council voted to deny the controversial project access to council-owned public land.
The idea, which is cool, would see a couple old as shit trees cleared to make room for pylons to carry capsules of tourists all the way to the top of the iconic Mt Wellington, and back. Like they do in tourism hot spots in Asia.
However, the council has said no because it looks like it’s the type of idea that might bring a lot of tourists to the area, and that’s something that baby boomers contact the council to complain about.
This comes months after the mayor of Hobart hilariously declared that he wants to “put the brakes” on the iconic Dark Mofo festival that has made the town millions and millions of dollars and put them on the map as an international arts and culture destinations.
Mayor Ron Christie came out swinging against the edgy tourist attraction Dark Mofo, saying the annual winter festival run by a gallery that he didn’t have to pay any money to build is pushing the boundaries of good taste.
“If we are going to have a festival that generates tens of millions of dollars over traditionally the worst time of the year for tourists, I’d much prefer to have it be something I came up with, and something I can be praised for” he said.
