One of the Liberal Party’s most controversial figures is believed to be making moves to knife Malcolm Turnbull and take leadership of the Government, after the Daily Telegraph decided he is who they would prefer as Prime Minister.
this comes after a knee-jerk reaction from party backbenchers that are terrified they might have to get an actual job, after the Fairfax/Ipsos poll released overnight, which showed support for the government plunging.
In its worst result since early last year and it would result in the government losing more than 20 seats at a general election.
According to the poll, the Coalition’s primary vote has dropped from 39 to 33 in just one month, and Labor now leads 55-45 on the two-party preferred measure.
In a peculiar turn of events, the Member for Dickson in Brisbane’s Northside is expected to take over leadership of the Liberal Party, despite losing 10% of his margin between 2013 and 2016.
In the 2010 election, Dutton won the seat of Dickson with a large margin of 8,353 votes more than Labor candidate Fiona McNamara, and in 2013 Dutton retained the seat of Dickson with 11,530 more votes than Labor candidate Michael Gilliver. However, Dutton’s winning margin narrowed in the 2016 election; he retained the seat of Dickson with 2,911 votes more than Labor candidate Linda Lavarch (only a 1.6% margin). He then blamed this shocking performance on bikies revving their engines outside his electoral office.
It is not yet confirmed if a libspill will be happening this week, however, the Liberal Government’s more conservative MPs have indicated that they truly are worried about the fact that the current leadership might not be able to ensure the future of coal-powered electricity for the next 40 years.
Peter Dutton was unavailable for comment as he was too busy banning journalists from visiting the Nauru detention centre to report on the hunger strike that has seen several pre-teen detainees collapse from starvation.
