World War I
Emotionally repressed nerds who prefer a bit of ambiguity instead of the simple good guy/bad guy trope of WWII. Likely to be introspective, detail-oriented, cynical and at times, gloomy. Has contrarian takes on anything mainstream and can’t resist playing Devil’s Advocate even if it ruins the mood.
World War II
The opposite of blokes who like WW1. Likely developed interest in WW2 after watching early 2000s war movies with dad or spending several hours down a YouTube rabbit hole as a teenager. Tends to develop very specific obsessions e.g Japanese fighter planes, Churchill’s speeches, Nazi propaganda. Thinks Inglorious Basterds is Tarantino’s best work.
Cold War
Also known as the ‘intellectual man’s war’, the cold war is for people who avoid conflict but hold a grudge. It’s all trade sanctions, espionage, and tense standoffs. Likely enjoys long movies most people find boring, and playing social deduction board games. Big fan of Tom Clancy if they’re over the age of forty.
The Vietnam War
The Vietnam war guy tends to be critical of authority and very anti-establishment, either getting radicalised after watching Apocalypse Now way too young or discovering what happened at Kent State University. Likely has high karma on Reddit, and enjoys a bit of Mary Jane now and then. Hates the US.
The Crusades
If a millennial, likely a huge Age of Empires and Assassin’s Creed fan. If older than the age of forty, likely Christian and attracted to the Crusades due to their perceived role in ‘Western values’…which is putting it nicely. Has strong opinions about muslims and Israel-Palestine conflict. Both enjoy medieval fantasy novels, films, and TV shows, and have a fascination with swords.
The Falklands War
Probably old, or at least old at heart, with fairly conservative views. A proud anglophile who was staunchly against the republic referendum and got genuinely upset when people made jokes about Queen Elizabeth’s death. Thinks Thatcher cops too much criticism. Prefers documentaries and intellectual war films like Dunkirk over anything starring Brad Pitt.
Modern conflicts (e.g., Afghanistan, Iraq)
Either enrolled in the armed forces or just a chronically online gamer who loves Call of Duty. Fascinated by modern military technology: precision-guided missiles, cyber warfare, and special forces operations. Has very strong opinions about drones. Either hates the US with a passion or weirdly defensive, there is no in-between. Almost definitely has multiple conspiracy theories about 9/11.
The Napoleonic Wars
Very pretentious and loves to use long words, but a great addition on the trivia team when it comes to geography and identifying flags. May have a penchant for being dramatic and flamboyant. Likely really into dense history books, classic literature and hates Superhero movies with a passion. Loves mentioning that napoleon nearly gOt SeNT tO AuStRaLiA.
Russian Civil War
The Russian Civil War guy is a hardcore leftie who unironically says things like “eat the rich” and “the only dangerous minority is a billionaire.” He spends more time on Instagram than he’d admit, mostly following political infographics, dank meme pages, and attractive alternative women who post about climate change. Thinks billionaires should be illegal and that Luigi Mangione did nothing wrong.
American Civil War
The American Civil War guy is a bit sketchy as he’s either secretly racist, or thinks the antebellum aesthetic is beautiful because he’s watched a lot of movies set in the American south. Knows far more about American politics than Australian, and is secretly hoping another civil war breaks out. May also be a borderline LARPer who likes painting figurines, and have strained relationship with one or more of their siblings.
Bonus – Military victories against the odds
A bloke with deep knowledge of any battle where an outnumbered force defeats a much larger enemy is almost definitely into real-time or turn-based strategy games. Loves a good underdog story, so he probably gets around sports movies too. Has played Warhammer or Dungeons & Dragons or wants to, but hasn’t found the right group yet.
