The Prime Minister of Australia has today moved to clarify the national position on the conflict in Gaza.
Speaking to media this morning, Anthony Albanese announced a historic referendum on the plight of the Palestinian people.
Taking place over the next 12-18 months, the nation wide poll is expected to cost in the realms of 400-500 million Australian dollars.
The question that the nation will vote Yes/No on hasn’t been decided but a draft has been floated, asking:
“Do you approve of the Australian parliament considering a motion to recognise Palestinian statehood at some point in the future pending the geopolitical climate and our allies.”
While the question is somewhat convoluted, the Government has assured us that a lengthy and polarising public campaign is necessary for them to do something on the issue.
When pressed on why they don’t just follow suit with the majority of the globe and simply recognise Palestinian statehood, the Prime Minister explained his position.
“Look, I don’t think we should be rushing into anything,” said Albanese.
“So I think a careful, considered, expensive approach to do something that doesn’t need a referendum is the way to go.”
“I’m sure the Opposition won’t turn it into a vicious culture war in an effort to swing voters.”
The exact date has yet to be announced, but will presumably be a long long time after the rest of the world bar America and Israel has recognised Palestine.
More to come.
