A Greek-Australian man from the suburbs of Melbourne who’s also an Arsenal fan, is only a few hours away from being confronted with a major moral dilemma.
Georgie Papadoupolos, a longtime Arsenal fan, has already set his alarm for 5am to watch the Europa League final; The only problem is that he still doesn’t know who to root for.
The final, which will be kicked off in the city of Bilbao by two British clubs, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, is seen as a final chance at redemption for both clubs that have performed terribly in their domestic league.
With George being an Arsenal fan, his natural instinct is to support any team that will provide him the necessary amount of his arch rival’s Tottenham tears, but this time it’s a little more tricky.
For the first time ever, an Australian will be managing a European cup finalist.
Ange Postecoglou, a fellow Greek-Australian who cut his teeth managing the iconic South Melbourne Hellas club, is fighting for his managerial survival at a club that has largely turned on him.
Postecoglou, who is famous for nonchalantly saying that he “always wins things in his second season”, is only one game away from not only making his extremely cocky statement a reality, but also winning Tottenham their first major trophy in 17 years; on top of being the first Australian to manager a European cup winning side.
Many Australian fans like George feel morally confused about the whole situation.
“I feel like my Arsenal self and my Greek-Australian self are at war within me….” George explained.
“I should be rooting for Tottenham to crash and burn….. But I just can’t get over this Australian cinderella story… It will really help to legitimise us as a footballing nation.”
“I’m absolutely stumped on this one.”
