A British national currently residing in Bondi has expressed concern over what he describes as an influx of immigrants back home in England, despite having himself emigrated to Australia in 2019.
Jake Hargreaves, a 33-year-old originally from Bolton in Greater Manchester, told reporters at a local café this morning that the situation in England’s getting out of hand, referring to what he perceives as a cultural shift in his home country.
“Doesn’t even feel like England anymore,” said Hargreaves, who has spent the last six years teaching spin classes in a gym that exclusively hires other expat Brits.
“You walk down the high street in Bolton now, and you don’t hear a word of English.”
When pressed on the irony of his comments, given his current residence in Australia on a skilled worker visa, Hargreaves was quick to draw a distinction.
“Yeah but that’s different, innit,” he said.
“I’m not, like, one of those immigrants. I’m just over here for the lifestyle. But there’s too many Irish here. You walk down the road in Sydney’s beachside suburbs and you’d think you’re down at the Forty Foot or Dún Laoghaire.
Local sources confirm that Hargreaves has assimilated seamlessly into the Eastern Suburbs, where he lives in a share house with three other Northerners.
“Australians are annoying, too. They’re always taking the piss out of you. Some guy the other day mimicked my accent at the pub, did the robot then dropped his guts and walked away. There’s too many of them here.”
More to come.
