The world is currently coming to terms with a brave new reality that confronts it – that provocative performers say things that provoke people.
This comes after staunchly anti-colonialist Irish activists Kneecap said some things on stage about Israel.
During their second set at the Coachella music festival in California on 18 April, the rap group, known for their political performances and support of Palestine, led the crowd in chants of “free, free Palestine”. Messages displayed on the stage’s screens during their set read: “Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people” and “It is being enabled by the US government who arm and fund Israel despite their war crimes.” Another read: “Fuck Israel. Free Palestine.”
The behaviour has rattled the globe, with many blown away how guys who appeared on stage with a severed statue head of the English King could do such things.
“Honestly, it just sickens me,” said a local news consumer who attended Coachella like 5 years ago and has never stopped going on about it.
“Disgraceful.”
The move from the band famous for saying provocative things who hail from the land that has historically supported the Palestinian cause, has also apparently left organisers of Coachella rattled as well.
However the group has sold out a run of shows in America and Canada, with their fans seemingly not deterred by the comments.
More to come.
