Hidden amongst the swaying river red gums that line the Diamantina River, “The Bend” is a popular spot which holds great significance for many local Betootians.

Located only 3 minutes from the outskirts of town, “The Bend” has long been regarded as a safe space for teens who have recently acquired their P-plates and is usually the place many experience their first pash.

A popular spot for end of school year parties, it’s believed one in five locals in the Betoota region actually lost their virginity on the riverbank, which is often littered with empty energy drink cans and mango vapes.

But in sad local news, The Advocate can reveal the space is under threat as local council have announced plans to build ‘Betoota Beach’, a family friendly park for yuppies to take their snotty little children for a swim in the polluted waters of the Diamantina River.

Speaking to a press pack this morning, Major Keith Carton said the new community hub was an exciting development for the town.

“Local people have loved coming here for years…” said Mayor Carton, who himself is believed to have lost his virginity at The Bend in the back of a Nissan Bluebird in the early 1980’s.

“We’re excited to announce we’ve secured $1.5 million in state government funding to transform the space with childrens play equipment, a bike track and a sandy beach complete with lifeguards on the council payroll.”

Speaking to one local teen, Nathan Dunt (18), it’s believed Betoota youth are up in arms about the decision which has been shared around on social media today.

“Mate it’s crook, ever since the council tore down the heights skatepark for that new housing estate, we’ve got nowhere to go,” said Nathan.

“The Bend was the last place in town us Year 12’s could drink the beer we stole from our parents garage fridge and maybe pash our crush from school. This town is cooked!”
