24-year-old Sydney girl, Sally Goucher, is finally coming to terms with the fact that she is not Carrie Bradshaw.
Despite living in a brownstone on East 73rd street in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Ms Goucher is in no way living a life as glamorous as the one presented by HBO’s iconic female lead, Caroline “Carrie” Marie Bradshaw – the fictional character from the romantic sitcom Sex and the City.
On the HBO series, Bradshaw is a New York City newspaper columnist, fashionista, and later, freelance writer for Vogue and a published author. Her weekly column, “Sex and the City,” provides the title, storylines, and narration for each episode.
The program, which outlines Carrie’s experiences as a New York City VIP with a flock of pretty girlfriends (each with their own unique character subplots) is about as far as you can get from Sally’s experiences in the same city.
Carrie Bradshaw’s glamorous outfits, social life and exciting love life are nothing but nostalgic high school memory for Sally, who now spends her Tuesday evenings drinking cheap red wine on her apartments fire escape with her seven Australian housemates.
“Its not as bad as people think,” says Sally, over skype while, her room mate sleeps on the other side of their shared double bed.
“Danny DeVito came into the cafe while I was working the other day. Its moments like that when you remember that you actually are living in New York, New York.”
“I also met Ke$ha the other day at my PR job. She was in there talking about her upcoming court case or something,”
Speaking to the Betoota Advocate today, Sally’s Australian ‘flatmate’ Matt (28) says it has been a big learning curve for the unpaid PR intern, part-time barista.
“The only thing Sally has in common with Carrie Bradshaw is the fact that she spends most of her life complaining about how shit her most recent date was. She also cheats on the first bloke that shows her any form of commitment,”
“She’s got the whole self-centred thing covered… But as for the ‘independent woman’ – I think her poor old man’s accountant back in Sydney would argue with that,”
